Not quite sure why I find these so funny. Maybe it’s the confidence in the delivery.

Morissey expounds on the Internet
Obviously, it’s much worse because the entire “industry”— as it must be called— has been destroyed in a thousand ways. The Internet has obviously wiped music off the human map— killed the record shop, and killed the patience of labels who consider debut sales of 300,000 to not be good enough. People no longer know the top 75 charts, and what they do know of...
Wonderful panorama of Paris. →
These mega-megapixel panoramas are nothing new, but this one struck me as wonderful for two reasons. First, the elegant execution doesn’t interfere with the experience at all, like some other panos in the same vein. Second, the vantage is amazing. Not sure how it was accomplished, but looking down and seeing the Eiffel Tower blew me away.
The Etsy/UrbanOutfitters Debacle
Last week, the internet was awash with the story about Urbanoutfitters, a corporation that has a reputation of repurposing (or, put more simply, stealing) smaller/independent artists, had struck again. This time they had stolen the premise of work by Etsy jewelry designer Truche and were were selling it online [original story]. The internet, in typical fashion, went mental, disparaging...

New blog demonstrates the power of the Onion
Quite hilarious: Literally Unbelievable documents people’s reactions to Onion stories — people who don’t get that it’s satire.
It’s great because it documents what I’ve always found so funny about well-written satire: some people don’t get it.

A fleet of one
The little four-wheelers live on risk. They endanger themselves. They endangered us. If you’re in a big truck, they’re around you like gnats. They’re at their worst in the on-ramps of limited-access highways, not to mention what they do on horse-and-buggy highways. They do the kissing tailgate. They do passing moves over double yellow lines. They make last-second break-ins from...

Tautology of the week goes to Ben Stein
“In life, events tend to follow patterns. People who commit crimes tend to be criminals, for example.” Genius.
Obama, the "Third Culture Kid"
Quite flattering — maybe overly so — but still a great read:
This is the reason Obama really could connect and appreciate rural farmers in Illinois, fit in with the Harvard crowd, and work as an effective community organizer in Chicago’s South Side. Obama is the classic TCK. This is why he represents the new America so well—he is post-racial, globalized, and a great example of America’s own...

On Trump
If I were back at the “old” FiveThirtyEight, I’d have put up a post entitled “The Electoral Consequences of Donald Trump Deciding Not to Run for President”. And then left the body text blank. Get it?

Special Needs: A review of Sarah Palin's Alaska
The nine-part docu-series Sarah Palin’s Alaska, shown late last year on the cable channel TLC, has the atmosphere of a cold war propaganda film.1 It shows the Palin family during the summer of 2010, making happy trips to one pristine Alaskan wilderness area after another—fishing, hunting, kayaking, dogsledding, rock climbing—and taking repeated little swipes at the left. The Morning Benders - Japan Echo EP
If more bands put together such a well-edited collection of remixes and b-sides, the world would be a better place. Get it! Got it? Good. [It’s only five dollars]

Understanding the nascent OFWGKTA phenomenon.
The internet has been awash with story, rumour and innuendo about Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All since their frenetic performance on Jimmy Fallon and the release of Tyler the Creator’s mental music video for the single “Yonkers.” I’ve been toying around with disassembling what has happened so far, so here it goes.
Though OFWGKTA have been posting mixtapes for free on...
"Why the U.S. Went to War"
The next day, Obama said the U.S. was intervening in Libya not just to prevent attacks by Gaddafi on civilians but to set a precedent. If Gaddafi were not stopped, he said, “the words of the international community would be rendered hollow.” Maybe the administration will get lucky: intervention could set Libya on the road to democratic development and help continue the political change sweeping...
Ben Goldacre on sourcing
But more than anything, because linking to sources is such an easy thing to do and the motivations for avoiding links are so dubious, I’ve detected myself using a new rule of thumb: if you don’t link to primary sources, I just don’t trust you. [link]

My 15 Favourite Albums
This probably changes depending on the time of day and the season, but I’m quite happy with the list I ended up with. Good mix of old(ish) and new. Definitely need more jazz and blues in my life though.
In no particular order:
Los Campesions - Hold On Now, Youngster
Why? - Alopecia
Japandroids - Post Nothing
Girl Talk - Night Ripper
James Blake - James Blake
Hey Rosetta! - Plan Your Escape...

Dear, dear Dexter.
Dexter just finished its fifth season, and I’ve been trying to sort out how I feel about the show. So, of course, I went over to the avclub to see what they had to say. They nailed it.
Dexter’s greatest antagonist has always been time. There’s a finite amount of stories to be told within this general framework, and so long as the show remains Showtime’s signature hit,...
